SIGN NOW: Tell NMFS to STOP corporate overfishing and SAVE endangered orcas from extinction!

Two Southern Resident orcas were born into the same pod as the beloved matriarch Marina who tragically died a couple short years ago! Now, there are 75 of these whales remaining in the wild.

This is hopeful news, but sadly, the mortality rate for calves within the first year of birth is as high as 50%! That’s why it’s crucial right now that we ensure the success of these two calves — and if these precious babies are going to survive, it’s imperative that they have enough food to keep them well-nourished and growing strong.

But industrial fishing corporations have been DECIMATING the Chinook salmon populations, leaving many orcas starving and malnourished. Unless we take immediate action to rein in overfishing and bycatch, these two vulnerable baby orcas stand little hope of living healthy and happy lives. Will you be a voice for these two defenseless orca calves before it’s too late?

Dear NOAA (NMFS),

Your agency is tasked with protecting our oceans and marine life. That means saving orca whales from extinction by stopping Big Oil and the shipping industry from polluting their direct environment — the ocean.

There are only 75 orca whales left in the Southern Resident pods, and that number is likely to decrease unless your agency enacts federal policies that hold Big Oil and shipping corporations accountable for the damage they are causing.

Two of the biggest threats to orcas right now are the Roberts Bank T2 Terminal and the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

The hazardous wastewater dumped   by massive ships can have far-reaching effects including toxic blooms, dead zones, and pathogen-related illnesses . Vessels also drive orcas’ food supply away with the noise pollution they generate. Furthermore, a massive jump in tanker and cargo ship traffic could lead to an oil spill in orca waters. Southern Resident killer whales cannot survive these impacts to their marine habitat and disruptions to the entire ecosystem.

I’m calling on you to take immediate action to protect orcas from extinction by enacting stronger protections for Southern Resident orcas’ main food source – Chinook salmon. I also ask that you demand stronger mitigation measures for the oil tankers and cargo ships from the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and Roberts Bank T2 terminal projects to mitigate the disturbances and risk of oil spills they present to orcas and their critical habitat.

Please do your part and stop Big Oil and the shipping industry from pushing Southern Resident orcas toward extinction.
