RE: Support for SB 253 and SB 261 Implementation & Budget Funding

Dear Governor Newsom, Pro Tem McGuire, and Speaker Rivas,

The undersigned [10-15k] citizens applaud your leadership in passing the Climate Corporate Accountability Act (Senate Bill 253) and the Climate-Related Financial Disclosure Act (Senate Bill 261). The passing of these laws puts California at the forefront of responsible government action to require large corporations doing business in the state to publicly disclose annually their carbon footprints (including Scope 1,2 & 3 greenhouse gas emissions), and to conduct mandatory and comprehensive climate risk disclosures. This climate risk transparency is vital for the public (including consumers, stakeholders, investors, and companies themselves) to know and make informed decision-making on the corporate sector’s and specific companies’ systemic climate-related risks. Given that California is the fifth largest economy in the world, these laws have the great potential to have a positive ripple effect across the US and abroad.

Of course, the legacy of your leadership in passing this bills cannot be ensured in the absence of robust and timely implementation. Therefore, we urge you to:

•	Ensure funding in this year’s budget for punctual implementation of SB 253 and SB 261.

•	Maintain SB 253 and SB 261 as signed into law, without changes that could compromise their timely implementation, including resisting climate-polluting industry attempts to exclude Scope 3 emissions.

We thank you again for your leadership in requiring corporate climate-related financial risks disclosure, and we urge you to ensure the job now gets done through timely and robust implementation of SB 253 and SB 261 by responsible state agencies .
