The federal government spends BILLIONS every year purchasing food – but most of this money supports big food corporations that accelerate the climate crisis and mistreat workers.

The federal government’s carbon footprint from food purchasing is massive. Meanwhile, small and sustainable farmers are struggling. Our tax dollars could be supporting these more eco-friendly farms instead, but we need your help to make sure it happens.

Dear Legislator,

As your constituent, I am writing to ask that you support the EFFECTIVE Food Procurement Act (S.3390/H.R.6569), recently introduced by Senator Markey and Representative Adams.

This legislation will better align billions of dollars spent annually by USDA on food procurement with the goals of equity, climate mitigation, and worker justice, and provide more options for schools, food banks, and other recipients of USDA's commodity food purchases. Right now, the majority of USDA’s food purchases support a small number of multinational agribusiness corporations. This legislation will help change that pattern, opening up a critical market opportunity for small and mid-scale farmers and ranchers, socially disadvantaged producers, and farmers employing climate-friendly agriculture practices.

USDA, as the largest food purchaser in the federal government, should leverage its purchasing power to help build a more just, healthy, and resilient food system from farm to fork. Please do all within your power to pass the EFFECTIVE Food Procurement Act.
