Tell Standard Chartered to stop financing the destruction of communities and our climate!

Standard Chartered likes to say that it takes climate change seriously. But the bank remains a major funder of coal-fired power plants.

As the catastrophic dangers of coal power become more clear, Standard Chartered is starting to feel the pressure to cut ties with the dirty coal industry. Now is our chance to convince the bank to stop financing the destruction of communities and our climate. But we can't do this without you.

To whom it may concern:

I am concerned about Standard Chartered’s funding of coal-fired power plants. I am aware that Standard Chartered is updating its position statements on coal. I encourage the bank to rule out funding all coal projects globally.

Developing countries are among the most vulnerable to climate change’s impacts. Hundreds of millions of people also have little or no access to energy. And, despite the demonstrated ability of renewable energy to improve access in remote areas, more centralized, inflexible and polluting coal power plants are being proposed that would write off a safe climate future for these communities and humanity.

Given that Standard Chartered sees itself as “a leading international bank focused on helping people and companies prosper across Asia,” it must recognize the significant harm that coal-fired power imposes on Asian communities. Concurrently, it should increasingly recognize and seek out opportunities to finance renewable energy and help clients and governments do the same.

I call on Standard Chartered to adopt a position statement that rules out involvement in financing any and all coal projects globally and to immediately withdraw from any such projects it is currently considering. Thank you for your consideration.
