FOE: Take Action

General Mills – the company behind popular breakfast cereals like Cheerios and Cinnamon Toast Crunch – has direct ties to companies in Indonesia like Astra Agro Lestari that are VIOLENTLY stealing land from Indigenous communities and degrading their forests.

Palm oil companies are responsible for decimating some of the world’s last standing forests that people and wildlife rely on for survival. In Indonesia, deforestation, land grabbing, and human rights abuses are essential ingredients in palm oil that appears in countless households goods. And when Indigenous land defenders resist, they face violence and even IMPRISONMENT!

It gets worse: All this massive deforestation is worsening the climate crisis and putting communities and vulnerable species at risk! We can’t stand aside while corporations destroy our life-giving forests.

Right now, our planet is facing a biodiversity crisis. More than 1 million species are at imminent risk of extinction. But this is not a mysterious disaster. The root causes are based in the corporate exploitation of our fragile ecosystems and surrounding communities, like the rainforests that orangutans, elephants, and all the inhabitants of the tropics need to thrive.

Instead of protecting these forests, corporations like Astra Argo Lestari are responsible for land grabbing, environmental degradation, and human rights abuses in Sulawesi, Indonesia. That’s why I am writing to urge General Mills to cut ties with Astra Argo Lestari and to use its leverage and global platform to directly engage AAL to provide meaningful redress and remedy to affected communities, including the return of land taken without communities’ Free, Prior, Informed Consent.

I understand General Mills prides itself on its sustainability policies, but policies and commitments are only as good as their implementation, and General Mills’ continued sourcing from Astra Agro Lestari reveal major holes in the company’s approach to stamping out environmental and human rights abuses in its supply chains and business model.

Ten consumer brands have already taken action to suspend ties with Astra Agro Lestari, but your company continues to source conflict palm oil from AAL. I urge General Mills to follow suit, suspend all sourcing from AAL and directly engage the company to return land taken without consent to communities and farmers.
