Tell the Department of Interior to protect Alaksa’s precious public lands for people and wildlife!

28 million acres of public lands in Alaska are under threat. Previous protections for these regions are gone. But you can help us get new protections and help stop mineral extraction from threatening the land and wildlife that Alaskan Indigenous people rely on.

Dear Director Cohn and Secretary Haaland,

I am writing to thank you for proposing bold protections for Alaska’s BLM D-1 lands, which support an abundance of biodiversity found in very few places remaining globally.

Opening these lands to industrial development would fragment some of our last remaining intact landscapes, affect migratory corridors for large mammals and birds, and impact important salmon streams that nourish entire watersheds. In a region experiencing rapid ecological fluctuations due to climate change, opening the D-1 lands will also undoubtedly create more stress on fish and wildlife populations and jeopardize the ability of these natural systems to support vital subsistence resources, Alaska Native communities, and hunting and fishing opportunities.

I urge you to swiftly finalize and retain the D-1 protections on all 28 million acres under review. With so many future uncertainties, it makes good sense to take a precautionary approach to public land management and preserve our Nation’s last best places for generations to come.
