Wave after wave of legal attacks on our environmental laws have led to bloody consequences for mama bears and cubs. When protections that help safeguard grizzlies from going extinct were rolled back, we saw an immediate spike in brutal trophy hunts. Now vulnerable grizzlies could be stripped of their protected status under the Endangered Species Act – and bloodthirsty trophy hunters could wreak havoc on these iconic bears’ survival.

Worse, extremist officials are backing this anti-wildlife agenda in a dead giveaway to greedy industries like Big Oil and Gas. Trophy hunters could clear bears from their habitats, opening them up to massive exploitation by Big Polluters! Fragile ecosystems and nearby communities would feel the impact of poisoned soil, air, and water.

We can’t let the toxic alliance of pro-hunting extremists and megapolluting industries lock in policies that doom species to cruelty, pollution, and EXTINCTION. That’s why we’re calling on the Department of the Interior to step up and do its job of protecting grizzly bears on a federal level before it’s too late. Dear Secretary Haaland,

Right now, the status of vital U.S. grizzly bear populations is under review. But while the goal should be to ensure the recovery of this threatened species instead, there is an effort to strip grizzlies of much needed protections under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). At the same time, the ESA itself is under near-constant attack from special interests such as oil and gas corporations and other major polluting industries.

We are witnessing a wildlife-hating, anti-environment partnership between these Big Polluters, the trophy-hunting lobby and extremist officials at the state and national levels. This is a direct continuation of policies that put these special interests ahead of the future of our planet and everything that lives on it.

There are less than 2,000 native North American grizzly bears in the lower 48 states, and removing ESA protections would be detrimental to ensuring their recovery. In pro-hunting states like Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, grizzlies are viciously targeted by trophy hunters who bait, trap, and shoot these innocent animals in cold blood. If federal protections are removed, it is nearly certain that these brutal trophy hunting tactics will become even more rampant throughout the lower 48 states and will result in excessive, unregulated killing of grizzlies and the devastation of their habitats.

In order to ensure the recovery of these iconic species, and course correct from the damage that previous rules have caused, stronger federal protections are absolutely critical, so I’m urging you today to demand that grizzly bears remain protected under the Endangered Species Act in all states before they go extinct and we lose these native North American treasures forever.
