Tell Home Depot and Lowe’s to STOP selling the toxic weedkiller Roundup!

Roundup has always been dangerous. Now, it’s even worse.

Despite these urgent concerns, Home Depot and Lowe’s continue to sell this dangerous product to their unsuspecting customers. We need your help to remove Roundup from store shelves!

I am writing to urge you to remove Roundup from your shelves. A new Friends of the Earth report found that Bayer-Monsanto’s new Roundup formulations are even more toxic to people, pollinators, and the environment than glyphosate-based Roundup. The new formulations are 45 times more toxic to human health, on average, following long-term, chronic exposure. The active ingredients in the new Roundup – diquat dibromide, fluazifop-P-butyl, triclopyr, and imazapic – all pose greater risk of long-term or reproductive health problems than glyphosate based on the EPA’s evaluation of safety studies. They have been linked to a variety of harms to human health, including birth and developmental abnormalities; reproductive dysfunction; kidney or liver damage; and irritation, inflammation, or allergic reactions affecting the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. The worst offender is diquat dibromide, found in all of the new Roundup formulations. It is 200 times more chronically toxic than glyphosate, is classified as a highly hazardous pesticide, and is banned in the European Union.

New Roundup formulations also endanger animals and the environment. On average, they are more toxic to bees, birds, fish, aquatic organisms, and earthworms. They are also more persistent in the environment and more likely to leach into groundwater, increasing the risk of contaminating waterways and drinking water.

Bayer-Monsanto's decision to make Roundup even more toxic, without warning consumers, is unconscionable. Garden retailers have an important role to play in protecting consumers from the increased risks of the new Roundup.

As a customer, I expect your company to protect the health of people, pollinators, and the planet by making the following commitments:

- Immediately remove all Roundup products from shelves and online sales;

- At the bare minimum, ensure labels and point-of-purchase information on Roundup products accurately convey the nature and levels of new risks;

- Aggressively work to phase out other highly hazardous pesticide products, setting measurable and time bound goals to decrease sales and make shelves safer overall;

- Increase offerings of organic and other safer options; and

- Publicize progress toward these commitments to demonstrate that your company has taken steps to protect pollinators and human health and will continue to do so.

Taking these actions would demonstrate your company’s continued commitment to sustainability and to protecting consumer health.
