Newborn calf L128 was a beacon of hope for recovery of Southern Resident orcas when she was born just months ago — but after being recently spotted looking frail, emaciated, and barely breathing, researchers believe she is already DYING.
Corporate overfishing is depriving orcas of the Chinook salmon they need to survive. Without enough Chinook salmon to sustain orca mothers and keep their babies alive, the mortality rate for newborn orca calves is as high as 50%! At the same time, overfishing is threatening traditional fishing practices and the communities who depend on the bounty of the sea for their livelihoods.
And now that Donald Trump is set to take office, his plan to maximize fossil fuel production will spell disaster for the orcas with increased risks from drilling and oil spills – and it's going to be even more difficult to secure federal regulations to rein in corporate polluters like the overfishing industry.
Unless there is swift and bold government intervention from the National Marine Fisheries Service, these greedy companies will only continue to put orcas, people, and the planet at risk for the sake of profit.
