Public lands are home to critical drinking water sources, and habitat for vulnerable animals are at risk. After a federal court ruled that environmental review supporting a 2022 Wyoming lease sale was illegal, the Department of Interior has re-published its environmental analysis – and more lease sales might be coming up.

I am writing out of concern over the recent draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No New Significant Impacts (FONNSI) for BLM’s June 2022 Wyoming oil and gas lease sale. A federal court ordered BLM to take another hard look at how drilling on these leases will harm drinking water supplies and wildlife, and to take into consideration the climate impacts. However, the EA makes clear that BLM has only continued to try and sidestep these issues. The leases issued at the 2022 Wyoming oil and gas lease sale gravely threaten our most critical public lands, causing billions of dollars in social and environmental damage. Fossil fuel extraction on these leases could poison groundwater and pollute surrounding communities. They risk irreversible harm to protected wildlife and habitat, and could greatly exacerbate climate change through greater greenhouse gas emissions.

We cannot and should not prioritize oil and gas drilling over the health of people and the planet. Continuing to extract and burn fossil fuels in the midst of a global climate crisis is a grave mistake – and doing so while ignoring significant environmental harms is nothing short of unlawful.

I urge you to remediate these defects in the draft EA and FONNSI, and adopt the No Action Alternative (EA Alternative 1), under which the agency will not affirm the issuance of the 81 leases from that sale.
