THIS IS URGENT: The Arctic is on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Expanded oil extraction in the Arctic releases even more greenhouse gas emissions, intensifies habitat destruction, and threatens irreplaceable wildlife and cultural resources.

But federal law still MANDATES oil and gas lease sales in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: opening the door for expanded drilling and destructive fossil fuel projects in this iconic wild space that is home to polar bears, caribou, walruses, and other imperiled species.

These reckless Big Oil activities not only accelerate global warming with mass pollution but also disrupt the natural balance of the Arctic’s fragile ecosystems that people and wildlife rely on for their livelihoods.

And soon, when Donald Trump returns to office this month, he has aggressive plans to significantly expand fossil fuel development — which means that increased oil extraction in the Arctic Refuge and other Arctic areas could soon decimate what’s left of this valuable region.

RIGHT NOW, Congress has the power to repeal the legal requirement for Arctic Refuge lease sales. By rejecting legislative language that locks in future drilling, we can safeguard the Arctic and hinder the Trump administration from advancing reckless fossil fuel development. I am writing to you today to urge you to take immediate action to protect the Arctic from being destroyed by Big Oil’s corporate greed and exploitation.  
 
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to essential ecosystems, wildlife habitats, keystone species — and people who rely on these natural resources for their livelihoods.

Unfortunately, federal law still mandates oil and gas lease sales in this wild space, which opens the door for destructive drilling and fossil fuel development that could push this fragile region to the tipping point. These activities exacerbate global warming, releasing harmful greenhouse emissions, and bring in massive amounts of pollution.

But Arctic drilling goes against protections listed under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), which requires federal agencies to assess the environmental impacts of any proposed development activities, including the evaluation of any related social and economic impacts, as well as consider possible alternative actions that could have a lesser impact.

That is why I am asking you to REPEAL the legal requirement for Arctic Refuge lease sales, contained in the The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (P.L. 115-97), and REJECT any legislative language that attempts to lock in future drilling — so that we can safeguard the Arctic from the fossil fuel industry that wants to decimate this fragile wild space.
