The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service just announced its long-awaited decision that grizzly bears still require federal protection under the Endangered Species Act!

It is clear by this decision that these majestic animals are still significantly IMPERILED and in dire need of federal safeguards to prevent their EXTINCTION. Grizzly populations remain threatened by human activities — including violent trophy hunting of these iconic animals for sport.

When Trump returns to the White House, things could get even worse for grizzlies. If he repeats the same relentless attacks on the Endangered Species Act (ESA) like he did during his first term, these beloved bears could lose their remaining key protections keeping them safe from being brutally massacred by trophy hunters.

We urgently need a plan of action to continue making progress for the conservation and protection of our beloved grizzlies. The newly proposed Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan includes updated science-based conservation strategies to improve management of isolated bear populations, establish new safeguards against potentially lethal human activities, and provide increased protections for grizzly habitats and related ecosystems.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has denied several petitions to delist the grizzly bear from the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This decision is paramount for the ongoing protection and wellbeing of these iconic, imperiled mammals. This decision also underscores the fact that grizzly bears continue to face numerous threats from human activity. Without federal protection, the authority on treatment of these animals will fall to state laws, many of which greenlight harmful activities such as trophy hunting.

Now is the time for Congress to step up and ensure that the grizzly bear receives the full extent of protections necessary by supporting the updated Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan.

The FWS Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan identifies six ecosystems as “recovery zones” targeted for restoring grizzly populations. To date, scientists agree that of the recovery zones, the NCDE and GYE have surpassed numbers identified as minimum goals in their respective recovery plans; the Cabinet-Yaak and Selkirk have not yet reached minimum goals for recovery; and the Bitterroot and North Cascades have no documented grizzly bear presence, though the FWS is currently in various stages of considering reintroduction. Removing ESA protections for NCDE and GYE populations would raise biological questions about the future recovery of the remaining populations, as well as legal questions for the FWS regarding distinct population segments under the ESA.

While there is evidence of recent grizzly dispersal in between several ecosystems, all six grizzly bear recovery zones are mostly biologically disconnected and isolated from each other. Between the Cabinet-Yaak and NCDE, only a handful of bear movements have been observed, with no documented offspring or genetic flow between the ecosystems. The GYE similarly remains isolated, and biologists have warned that continued long-term isolation could lead to genetic homogeneity within the bear population.

We urge Congress to do everything in its power to ensure the continued recovery of grizzly bears by supporting an updated recovery plan with greater protections for all grizzly bear populations in the lower forty-eight states. Science-based recovery plans and robust conservation policies must be in place for each relevant state before a delisting decision can be made.
