Dear Representative,

I am alarmed that Congress has not acted to make permanent the temporary ban on uranium mining near the Grand Canyon.

Despite a twenty year ban enacted in 2012 to protect the Grand Canyon from future mining projects, this iconic landscape and local Indigenous communities continue to feel the devastating impacts of previous mining projects. Grand Canyon springs are already polluted by contaminated water from at least one abandoned mine and another mine that was reopened in 2009.

What’s more, water samples taken by the U.S. Geological Survey show that 15 springs and five wells within the Grand Canyon’s watershed contained dissolved uranium concentrations which exceed the standards for safe drinking water.

Moreover, local Indigenous tribes and an overwhelming majority of citizens want to protect the Grand Canyon’s springs and sacred waters from uranium pollution.

For the sake of our environment and the health of frontline communities I implore you to support a permanent ban on uranium mining on lands near the Grand Canyon.
