Take action now: Tell your Assemblymember to increase access to plant-based food in our schools!

Our nation’s overconsumption of industrial meat -- starting in the schools -- is bad for our personal health and the health of our planet. And study after study shows that we cannot solve our environmental crises unless we drastically reduce industrial meat and dairy consumption and shift towards plant-based foods.

Now, we have a chance to increase access to healthy and climate-friendly, plant-based food for California’s six million kids. But we need your help to ensure the California Assembly acts!

Dear Assemblymember,

As a Friends of the Earth supporter, I am writing to urge you to support AB-479, the Healthy, Climate-friendly School Lunch Act (Nazarian). This bill will reduce the carbon footprint of school food while increasing access to healthy food for more than 6 million kids that receive free and reduced lunch in California.

Many California school districts want to serve healthier, fresh, plant-based meals. AB 479 will provide the support they need to offer plant-based milks and add more plant-based entrees to their menus.

With 540 million lunches served every year, incentives for plant-based entrees can help the state can achieve a significant and measurable reduction in our food consumption-based GHG emissions. That’s because plant-based foods generate far fewer emissions than animal products such as pork, chicken and beef that are on school lunch menus every day. Research shows that healthy, protein-rich plant-based foods like beans and lentils are 26 to 34 times less carbon intensive than beef. They also require far less water to produce.

For years, the federal government has been subsidizing carbon-intensive animal foods. It’s time for California to provide a counterweight to those subsidies by providing an incentive to schools to serve healthy, climate-friendly, plant-based meals to our kids.

Please prioritize our children’s health and the environment by supporting the Healthy, Climate-friendly School Food Act (AB 479)
