Dear EPA Administrator Michael Regan,

I am writing to urge you to investigate and disclose any relevant public health information regarding air or water pollution following the Deer Park, Texas pipeline explosion.

On Monday, September 16, 2024, at approximately 9:55 a.m. CT, a pipeline operated by Energy Transfer exploded on the 8700 Block of Spencer HWY in Deer Park/Laporte, Texas. The explosion was so severe that workers from nearby businesses and local grocery stores ran for their lives, daycares rushed to contact parents, and students from the local college felt the heat from the blast and the resulting extreme heat.

At the time of the blast, 4,000 homes experienced power outages caused by the explosion; this occurred as temperatures in the area regularly reached above 90 degrees.

The community has yet to see any information about the specific emissions in the region or details from Energy Transfer about what is being transported in the pipeline. Reportedly, the fire continued until the substances burned off.

I urge EPA Region 6 and US EPA to acquire any information regarding the incident, including, but not limited to, daily updates, unified reports, chemicals and quantities being released due to the explosion, material held inside the pipeline, evacuation orders, affected nearby bodies of water, cleanup and disposal process, root cause, and air monitoring reports.
